I went swimming again. I pushed a little harder. Again, my flip turns went bad mid-work our.
This time they started going sideways toward the end of 10 x 50s. I entered into the turn fine, and then watched as my body seemed to be going sideways instead of head over heals. Strange, eh?
I can only guess that my flip turns gone wonky is the result of pushing past some threshold.
I am wondering:
- Has anyone else experience something similar to this?
- Can I expect improvement as my swimming fitness improves?

I have not yet entered the swimming mode. Let’s just say the entire workout would be wonky!! :) Can’t help you, but I can cheer you on! :) Go Juls! Get over the wonkies! :)

Honestly, this doesn’t seem that weird to me. My flipturns always leave me looking to one side of the pool (my left, as I’m approaching the wall), and I push off with my torso facing sideways instead of straight down. I also know some people who always come out of flipturns upside down, and have to roll over after pushing off the wall.
I think the most important thing is to get efficient at whatever method is most comfortable for you. Then you can concentrate on making a faster, tighter, more compact flip which will make your overall lap times faster as well.

My turns morph in the middle of the work out leaving me sideways and upside down with my feet facing the lane line instead of the wall.

sounds to me like you’re probably tiring out your core and leaning to your stronger side.
(not a swimmer, but I know what happens to flips on the trapeze when you get tired and don’t control as evenly with your abs and back)
