I had an observation that I have noticed on my blog (among others). It would seem that the first commenter sets the stage for all the other comments that follow. This seems to be true even when the first comment is off topic.
So….
I wanted to suggest that you post your comment first and then read the other comments. If you feel compelled, you can add another comment afterwards.
You will also notice that I have been making some changes to my comment field. The TypeKey authentication did not work, however my blog will have to get reacquainted with you before your comments get published automatically. Don’t be discouraged; your comment will arrive to the site shortly. IF you have a TypeKey account, please log in to be added to my authenticated commentors listing.
And if any of you lurkers want to come out and say “hello,” this is a perfect time to do it. I’d love to hear from you.

The run in the park with Ronin sounds great! So do the long runs. :) Glad you could get out for it. Loved the smile in the photo! :)

I totally agree with your post about comments. The first one sets the tone for the rest.
I enjoy your blog. Nice writing.

Hi. I found you via the Blog 365 feed.
I hadn’t noticed it before, but I think your commenting theory is a good one. I rarely read comments before I leave one, so good for me! ;)

I haven’t noticed the comment thing – and it’s funny because I usually don’t have time to read the comments before I comment, except of course today, when reading your post on comments made me read the comments. Now I’m confused…

I’m too shy to comment ;-)

Ah! This explains a lot about why I can’t go back and comment on posts from a few days ago (look, I still love you, but sometimes I get behind because, well, because I have little kids!). Anyway, comment spam SUCKS, so I get it. It’s just that you’re the most awesome 40-something mom ever, and I feel the need to tell you!
I think it’s time for your Big Sis to start her own blog. You know that I’ve been waiting for it for some time, now. :)

I wish that the “blog janitor” plug in would do what the settings are tell it to do. It is supposed to close comments after a certain number of days. Just the other day I got junk comments on blog post that I wrote in 2006 (One that I thought comments were already CLOSED on).
I don’t want to be too extreme, but I don’t want to leave them wide open. I always find that when I go to comment on Dooce’s blog the comments are already closed. I think she has a 16 hour rule. Anyhow…

“No comment”….mine, I believe started the whole approval process changes….Happy weekend everyone.

Actually, I *think* how it works is that once you have a comment approved you should be able to comment freely again. I’ve tried to set up the authentication several times in the past and could not figure it out. I finally got it going late last night, but I think that instituting it now (after everyone has already gone through this process) would be frustrating for my readers and discourage comments all together. That is NOT what I am after.
If you have something to say, please comment. I love hearing from you. If you really don’t have anything to say but just want to say “Hello,” then do that.

I really enjoyed your post about the meet-up with Mia, Brit & Scott. Feelin’ the love! Someday maybe I’ll be able to eat and laugh with you too.
Good job with Ronin lately – encouraging progress!
Now can I read the others’ comments? :)

regarding all of the previous comments, …well have a great run today!

I read all the comments before posting mine. I’m like that!
A related phenomonon, it seems to me, is commeter momentum. It seems like the more comments a post gets, the more likely readers are to leave their own comments. I don’t know if that is a safety in numbers thing or if we think a post must be inherently more interesting and worthy of our time if a bunch of other people have commmented. Also I think some people comment just for the other commentors on heavy traffic blogs – sort of sub-blogging behavior maybe?
