I’ve got a bit of residual ankle and foot pain. My first morning steps are fought with apprehension. Images of being frail and elderly fly past as I hobble my way to the bathroom. It’s not exactly the feeling I like waking up to.
If I were to make an attempt at diagnosing this pain, I’d assert that there are no broken bones but probably some tendon or ligament strain which will heal fully after a given amount of rest. This conjecture is based on the hodge-podge of post marathon signs and symptoms, previous experience with soft tissue injury, and perhaps a tiny contribution from my nursing assessment skills.
Already, nearly two weeks have passed since my last marathon. In the days between Boston and Big Sur, I was experiencing the same sort of pain, although intermittently. Yet in the short 13 days between races, I did get back out on the road and resume training – however cautiously.
On one hand, I wonder what would happen if I were to do just that: resume running and just see. On the other hand, I don’t feel the need to push my luck right now. There’s nothing on the calendar and my body has already given so much. Allowing me to chase my goals (for years on end), my body has generally given me little complaint.
As I sit idle, waiting for some sign that it is safe to resume running again, I am making plans for the next few wild adventures. It’s exciting to entertain the options and I am careful to push them out far enough to allow for proper training.
I’m getting antsy to move past injury and conjecture and on to the bigger aspirations at hand.
Here are some considerations I’m aspiring toward:
Cycling: Foxy’s Fall Century (October)
Running: Sequoia 30K (August), Woodside 35K (December), Skyline to the Sea 50K (April 2012)

I think your body is wanting to compromise.

You are amazing, doing two in thirteen days, and pushing your body to its limits. Some days of rest-maybe biking or swimming? might be in order. :) Hugs, and Congrats! :)
