Way back when I worked as a nurse, I worked in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU). Friends and family thought I must be crazy to care for critically ill kids. They thought it would be too depressing.
And certainly it was depressing on occasion. It’s never easy to see children so ill. But there was a sort of magic that happened caring for these kids. Perhaps because they didn’t know any better. These kids defied the odds and got better — most of the time.
This little gal was one of my favorite patients. We all fought over her but I was lucky enough to be one of her regular nurses for the time she spent with us.
