Tell me readers, does anyone else go through post-marathon depression? Okay, as depression goes, what I experience isn’t debilitating like true depression. The let down usually hits after the hype from marathon completion settles down. This is when I am left feeling empty and goal-less. But it’s more than that…
missing in action
I guess you’re wondering what happened to Juls. Well, I’ll tell you. She ran a marathon and is really tired. Believe it or not, she’s actually too tired to blog. But don’t worry…she’ll be back soon.
You should know that she’s pretty pleased with herself right now because she ran hard but also took in the scenary. Shortly after crossing the finish in 4:24:21, she was already thinking about her next marathon. It looks like it will be CIM in December of this year. I think this is where she will qualify for the Boston Marathon.
Anyway, I think her medal looks pretty cool on me. Do you agree?
I wonder how long until she asks for it back.
Planning: Does it make perfect?
Clinical research trials are designed to be perfect experiments where everything including breakfast, swallowing the pill, blood pressure checks, and blood draws are carefully planned. Timing is set to occur at exact time points. This allows for consistent and meaningful data which will (hopefully) inform researchers on everything from how the drug is absorbed into the blood stream to how quickly it is metabolized. Safety, of course, is of the utmost importance. Study participants are therefore monitored carefully for untoward events. Everything is recorded and timing is noted to the exact second (using satellite synchronized clocks.)
My business trip to Nebraska was more of a formality than anything else. Staff at the clinical site performing our study are experts on this stuff. It is their bread & butter so to speak. For this reason, I was quite nervous about presenting to them. You could say that I planned for the worst but hoped for the best. Because of this bread & butter expertise, they were well versed in the drill. I couldn’t help but be nervous anyway and waking up 30 minutes before leaving for the site (thanks to human error on alarm setting) did not help matters.
Covering Boston
I thought either my change to Direct TV was the reason for not finding Boston Marathon coverage OR that I was just an idiot. As it turns out, neither is the case. There was only live TV coverage for those in the Boston area. I’m appalled. Why do those who live in the Boston area need TV coverage when they can just walk outside and see the race?
Although BAA posted tweets regarding the race, I could not quell my disappointment. I can’t tell you how I look forward to this each and every year. Much like the Tour de France (TdF) is for cyclists, the Boston Marathon is HUGE for marathoners. But you can bet that OLN/Verses will have live coverage for the TdF. *sigh* [end rant]
Fortunately, destiny would be on my side. After posting a tweet of protest, I received a notification of a new follower. I checked out their tweets, as I always do, to be sure that they weren’t some freak case or SPAM artist. That was when I discovered their tweet regarding LIVE Boston Coverage on their site — for FREE!
I clicked over, carried my laptop to the bathroom and started getting ready for the day. The laptop got carried room to room as I continued to get ready.
I was quite bummed at the point where I had to leave in order to get YaYa to school I time but somewhat comforted that at least I got to see some of the race. I paused the live stream and hoped that I could resume watching when I returned home. I knew it was unlikely.
A short while later, I found myself unable to resist checking in on the race from my cubicle at work. My timing was beyond perfect. The women’s race was coming to a finish and the men’s was not far behind.
I was glued to the computer, clenching my fists, silently screaming “Go, Go, GO!” Both finishes were AWESOME! The women’s race was seriously close and the men’s ended with a record breaking finish.
I am now hovering on the ceiling with excitement. Big Sur is in less than a week and I am so PSYCHED!
