Although it has been hot outside this week the kids returning to school reinforces the need to run at lunch. Aside from moving around my workouts, I have gotten back on track for the week’s workout schedule. It’s a lighter week and I am looking forward to a shorter long run.
Unfortunately, I was not able to utilize the high school track this morning prior to coming into work. I figured that it would be awkward now that school is in session. Instead I partnered with Garminia for another successful speed workout.
It’s been a while since I have done repeats away from the red and white track. The last time she ‘coached’ me, I remember wanting to throw Garminia to the ground. As I selected my 800m repeats workout from the menu of Advanced Workouts, I modified the programming to keep her from badgering me if I was deviating from the planned pace. Some people do well with verbal proding. I have learned through past experience that I am not one of those people.
I warmed up for a mile and then triggered the start of my first, of 8 half-mile repeats. Part way through the interval I would glace over at Garminia’s screen to see a the lap pace displayed. After verifying my target pace, I looked to see how much farther I needed to run before my next recovery. Repeatedly I would check the number and then mentally see where I was around the track. It was cool to be so in tuned to the various points around the track that I could visualize myself rounding the curve and sprinting the final straight away. As I approached the line, Garminia would begin chirp-chirp-chirping to let me know that it was time to recover.
In spite of the heat, I still managed to hit my paces as planned. It’s so cool to be inching up on marathon day with some success under my belt.
As my running falls into place, I am looking to my career to do the same. I have been working on adding a positive spin to my interview responses. I’d like to do a better job at presenting myself to the interested companies. I want them to want to hire me as much, if not more, than I want to work for them.
It seems like things are beginning to look up. While it is possible that I’ll be slammed with another life challenge, I am going to enjoy staying optimistic for as long as it lasts.

I don’t know how you are running in this heat!! I’ve been going at 8pm when it finally begins to cool off. Good luck with the interviews…somebody will be very lucky to have you.

ps I read the back to school post and wanted to say something but couldn’t think of anything special enough because what you said really moved me. Just wanted you to know.

I also don’t know how you can run at high noon. I went out at 8:30 this morning and that was bad enough!
I had my first phone interview today. Good times!

First, great job on hitting your splits and in this weather. It’s been hot hot hot everywhere in the state this week. You’ll do very well if it turns out to be a warm one in October.
Second, as someone that just went through the interviews process, I agree that being as positive as possible is going to leave a much better impression. It’s also hard for some of us not used to absorbing the glory to play up our strengths. We feel like we’re showing off — which is exactly what you need to do. I honestly think this is where a lot of men have an edge because, at least in my business, they more easily take credit when it’s given (and not always deserved!). Good luck on making that job change.

Last night we were sharing the track with the xc team as they finished up for the evening. School hasn’t started here yet – next week is the big day.
I can hear the postive attitude in your post! Good luck with the interviews.
