Have you ever had trouble falling to sleep? For me, it has been a common occurrence for most of my life. I’ve tried meditating, taking hot baths, drinking warm milk or hot tea, and counting sheep. None of it seems to work. Even my sleeping pills have a questionable efficacy. What have you tried?
a trip down memory lane
Mom asked me to show her how to sort photos on her Mac. Within minutes, I was knee deep in old photos from my old life. As the good memories came rushing back, memories of sadness and loss were also reawakened. I click – clicked through the photos, sent a few to my online album, and reflected on the past few years.
After a quick trip down memory lane, I let the pain sit and returned to the present to embrace all that is good. Thankfully, there is plenty of good these days.
Cycling with Mom
A few days before Mother’s Day I got a great idea on how to spoil her. This amounted to accompanying her on a bicycle tour in the nearby foothills. If she was in real estate, this would be her preferred way to show off these neighborhoods and get a bit of hill climbing done in the process. She obviously prefers to weave in and out of the neighborhoods to taking the last of the country roads off into the sunset.
Nonetheless, riding with Mom and her hubs was really a nice change in pace. While she flew down the hills at lightening speed, I took the descents at a timidly cautious speed. Note: The roads were WET! I made up for lost ground on the hills though. Challenging Mom’s hubs to a duel, we took on the hills and then circled back to bring Mom in.
After checking out the hillside homes, we made our way to the local Starbucks before the final few miles. We were just rolling out again when we discovered Mom’s flat tire. Lucky for Mom, her hubs was happy to come to her rescue. And I, being the paparazzi that I am, caught the whole thing on camera. Enjoy!

mo music
We took a trip into the city to see my cousin Jake perform. His band was 1st to take the stage — at 9:30 PM! I felt so old thinking about how tired I’d be because of it. Seriously though, Jake’s rock band put on a great show. They were followed by no 1 but 2 reggae bands that were equally awesome. Even better, the band from the islands is one that BoBo likes. Yeah, mom made the Cool List last night.
After some wine, a beer, and breathing in a bit of secondhand smoke, I was feeling pretty relaxed. My sways finally morphed into a somewhat dance-like movement which, I think, may have actually been in time to the music. I really didn’t care at that point. I was simply enjoying myself. Oh, and when a random stranger said I was “Hot,” I just laughed, thanked him, and looked over at my date who was just returning from the bar yet. He, by the way, was pretty hot himself.
Did I mention dinner? It was absolutely awesome. The night was fun beyond belief.
